Unit #2
We were assigned to watch two videos, The first one was called the Visibility of Whiteness, and the second one was about a third grade experiment. I did not agree with everything the first video said. For instance not all white people are racist, also white people should have to be ashamed to be white anymore then people of color should be ashamed. Does racism still exist in today's society? yes it does but I believe its more hushed up, its a private matter. I also do not believe that racism will ever be gone. However with help from people, like in the second video we could start teaching other generations to look past color and just see people. The second video was very affective, I agreed with what the teacher decided to do in order to get her young class to understand what its like to have the situation reversed. I also like how she used the technique on the adults. The world could use more people like that.

I agree, this first set of video just ripped apart white people. Not all white people are racist. Those videos just focused of the negatives of white people. It really bothered me. Racist does exist for sure, however i agree with you when you say its " hushed up." Racist will probably never go away, but we need to work on it as a society and cut back on it and work to try and eliminate it. the way the teacher went about the experiment was brilliant in my eyes. It really got her point across and, as she showed us, it works on all ages. The world def needs more teachers and people like that. if the world have more of her I think that Racism would be cut back drastically.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with your views on Mirrors of Privilege. It tried to make white people feel bad for things that lots of people had no hand in or even do. It bothered me a lot that they felt guilty for being white. You are also very right when you say that racism will never go away, its like trying to eradicate an idea in people's heads. It's never going to go away because you'll never know when people are thinking it and I also liked how you pointed out they made it seem like every white person is racist.
ReplyDeleteThe first experiment in a class divided was very effective because it was kids, but the adult experiment did not work very well because they were grown men and women being talked to like they were kids. I dont like Jane Elliot
I feel like the first set of videos almost felt like an attack on white people. sure the things that happened to the people in the stories were terrible but not every single white person was involved in any kind of racist act. And no one could honestly say that ONLY white people were involved in racist actions. So why these videos are completely focused on white people and how terrible there are is beyond me. People should not be dwelling on what happened in the past and focus instead on what they can do now to help eliminate racism. now that doesn't mean that I think racism will ever go away, because I dont, but I do think there are things that can be done to make it less and less prevelent in society. Getting rid of Affirmative Action is one thing that could be done because that is one thing that is supposed to counteract racism but it forces employers to be racisit by having to choose employees based on race.
